What happens during a chimney inspection in San Jose

The inspection starts at the hearth, not the roof. We open the damper and check whether it moves at all. Many are frozen open or rusted shut. Then the firebox: refractory panels get read for cracks, and mortar joints get probed for separation. Next the smoke chamber, looking straight up with a light.
