What a pilot light call actually involves
Gas gets shut at the appliance valve first, then the unit cools. On sealed direct-vent inserts, now the majority of active units here, the glass panel comes off and the gasket gets inspected before anything else. The pilot hood and orifice are checked under a light. Spider webs, lint and dust plug that orifice constantly on units that sat idle all summer. The orifice is cleaned properly, not just brushed at.
Then the flame itself. A correct pilot flame wraps the thermocouple tip, steady and blue-tipped. We read thermopile output in millivolts, both open circuit and under load. Weak loaded output means the generator is failing, not the gas valve. Wall switch, remote receiver and wire terminals get an ohm check. Cracked ceramic on a spark electrode causes the intermittent no-light nobody can reproduce.
Local causes show up often. Gas log conversions in open masonry fireplaces with clay tile liners lose pilots to downdraft, worse when a cracked crown or missing rain cap lets storm rain soak the flue. In 1975-2000 subdivisions with prefab fireboxes and Class A chase chimneys, rusting chase covers drip water down onto the pilot assembly and valve terminals.
Valves on 1980s and 1990s units are frequently discontinued. Thermocouples and thermopiles are still common; we photograph the rating plate and source parts off-site. When no valve exists for that model, chasing salvage parts is not honest work.
